My Family of Artists

From the very moment she could hold a pen, my eldest daughter Veejay was already making freehand drawings. As she grew up from a little girl to become a teenager, her mom and I supplied her with paper and pen to draw. Everyday and everywhere we went, she drew non-stop. Every back page of every scratch paper at home, she had drawings in it.

Little did we know that 14 years later, her baby sister Jinjie would be doing the same thing! She also enjoys drawing non-stop. Her mom and I supplied her with paper and pen too from a baby up to now that she’s already 14 years old. About 3 years ago, she began using a Wacom pen tablet to make digital drawings using a computer.

Family Background in Art

We have seen their artistic development over the years. My wife and I are so blessed. Where did this talent come from? From God of course. But does genes have to do with it too? Here’s our family background.

I took up Architecture and I love to do freehand drawings  too. But I’m not that good at it. I am somehow not so passionate about it. But I excelled instead in technical drawing — aided by architectural drafting instruments back then. My wife also loves to draw. She took Fine Arts in college for a year before shifting to Nutrition. My wife’s Dad, Henson Fen Santos was once a comic illustrator during his single days. And my wife’s uncle, Jesse Santos has been making a name for himself in the art world especially in California where he lives.  And just recently, my very own sister graduated magna cum laude in BS Fine Arts at the University of Oregon a year or so ago. So, how about that for an artistic background in the family?

I’m just so glad that God has blessed my kids with such talents. Fourteen years apart but having the same interests. Isn’t that amazing? Does genes have something to do with it? I don't know.

Len, remember several months ago when I mentioned to you about a girl in your family who could amazingly draw original cartoons. It was back in 1971, when your family still lived close to FUHS, when I witnessed her drew like a pro--foreshortened views of bodies and all. Perhaps you have a better idea now who might that girl be in your family.

Hello Allan, in 1971 it must have been my sister Carmen. She's been busy painting and accepting commissions for her to do painting in Oregon. She's enjoying it.

In the final sentence of the article, you asked, " Genes?"

I say, "Genes, primarily; encouraging environment, secondarily."

On Veejay's hunger for books, that's great! Read as many as you can. Variety is the spice of life. I suggest, go to the next level of awareness in your readings, not just pleasure and learning. Do critical thinking at the same time, especially books that purport to be presenting to you the truths of life and the mysteries of the universe.

Wisdom is not being able to answer all questions, but the ability to question all answers.

So, every book should get you wiser than the last one. Enjoy. (Sorry for the unsolicited advise.)
