Oxidative Stress and Antioxidants

Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:17

What? Oxidative stress?

Antioxidant what? I must admit I didn't understand these words. So I did some research. Here's what I found.

Oxidative Stress

When we breath oxygen -- we have to and we do! -- our body cells produce energy and as a result, highly reactive molecules (they call it "free radicals") are produced. This may cause damage to our cells as these free radicals interact with other molecules within the cells in our bodies. This leads to some diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many more. Very stressful indeed!

Antioxidants

To fight against oxidative stress, our bodies naturally produce antioxidants to defend itself against damaged tissues caused by these "free radicals" -- an interesting name! But our body's ability to protect itself depends on several factors like: our genetic makeup, the environment we are exposed to, our diet and our lifestyle. Antioxidants can be of great help in anti aging (protein damage), against cancer (DNA damage), heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.

Oxis International, Inc.

Here's a company I discovered which is engaged in combating oxidative stress -- the Oxis International, Inc. Although they have various products (nutraceutical, cosmecuetical and others), their primary products are incorporated with the "super antioxidant" compound, L-Ergothioneine ("ERGO") as the main component. It also uses glutathione, a small protein composed of three amino acids, as a major antioxidant.

In short, this company is "engaged in the research, development and sale of products that counteract the harmful effects of 'oxidative stress.'" Although the company's shares are deemed as penny stocks, it is about ready to soar according to management. This is one company that helps humanity live lives more fully by reducing oxidative stress that we all go through daily. Here's a company that leads in the advance of oxidative stress technology. Aside from its website, Oxis International, Inc. is also on Facebook and Twitter.
