Chip Tsao, a Chinese journalist from Hongkong is hot news in the Philippines for about 3 days now. He wrote a satire on the Spratlys issue and in the process he called Filipinos a "nation of servants" among other racist remarks. He instantly got the ire of millions of Filipinos from all over the world. His publishers removed his article from publication immediately. Just a few hours ago, I saw him on TV publicly apologizing before media and some Filipino diplomatic officials in Hongkong.
Guilty of the Same Too!
We too can make the same mistake if we're not careful. Some bloggers (and others), as they retaliated in their anger (or hatred?) for Chip Tsao's racial slurs may have also made the same mistake of racially discriminating against the Chinese people by also calling them names or writing the same racist remarks towards the Chinese people. This only aggravates the situation among races and nations. It does not build up unity and understanding among peoples.
Jesus reconciled All -- Jews and Gentiles
This is the reason why Jesus came to earth -- so that there will be peace and reconciliation. There was a time when the Jews felt they were a superior race and they looked down on the Samaritans. They considered non-Israelites or non-Jews as "Gentile sinners" (Gal. 2:15 ). Jesus came so that he could reconcile both Jews and Gentiles. There is no longer a dividing wall of hostility. All are one in Jesus (Eph. 2:11-14 ).
Everybody's Prejudiced
Decades ago, I learned from one of my mentors that "everybody's prejudiced." "Don't kid yourselves, everybody's biased," he said. To varying degrees, we can all be biased; we can sometimes become racists without our realizing it. We are all sinners and we all fall short of the glory of God. As much as possible let us learn to "live peaceably with all men." "Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." (Heb. 12:14 )
All are One in Jesus
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Gal. 3:28-4:1 ). Thankfully, in Jesus we are all one and he has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Let's get to work and do just that. Let's get reconciled to one another.
