"Sir..Christian ba si Tita Cory? Did she accept the Lord Jesus Christ?" "Tanong ko rin po yun, did she accept Jesus? nakakalungkot po kung hindi." These are two questions posted by well-meaning Christians in the comments section of a prominent Christian leader's Facebook account.
No Salvation after Death?
It is commonly believed in some Christian circles that if a person has not yet accepted Christ before he dies, then his fate is in hell -- the lake of fire. Some evangelistic methods are based on this belief. "Are you sure you're going to heaven when you die?" "Accept Christ now before you die or else, you go to hell" is the message of most.
Driving Force in in Evangelism and Missions
Most missionary efforts are also based on this belief. For some missionaries, they believe that the salvation of the world rests on their missionary efforts -- "finishing the task." Some mission agencies would tell us that several millions of people are lost daily in places where Christ's name has not yet been heard and that they are now in hell because no one has preached to them the gospel before they died. This is the the common belief and this is what drives all the evangelistic and missionary efforts of many Christians to fulfill the great commission.
But is this really the Lord's teaching? Is God incapable of saving anyone anymore after the person dies? Is this belief biblical?
Heroes in Hell?
What about those New York policemen and firemen who lost their lives trying to save those who were trapped inside the doomed twin towers of the World Trade Center a few years ago? They were considered heroes right? Are they lost just because they were not able to accept the Lord before they died a "hero's death?"
